In search of an authentic Australian theatre experience?
Ballarat's Her Majesty's Theatre is set to deliver a major cultural moment this winter.
For the first time in 40 years, Ray Lawler’s iconic The Doll Trilogy will be performed back-to-back on a single day (Saturday 20 June) by the same ensemble, just as Lawler intended when he wrote the three plays.
Following two Queensland cane cutters and their romance with two Melbourne girls across three turbulent decades, Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre's The Doll Trilogy captures working-class Australians with warmth and emotional depth, moving through:
- the optimism of Kid Stakes (11am)
- the wartime uncertainty in Other Times (3pm)
- the powerful finale of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll (7.30pm)
Between performances, make a day of it in Ballarat!
Settle into Her Maj’s Long Room with Doll Trilogy-themed cocktails by local distillery Itinerant Spirits while ARIA-nominated musician Sam Boon performs songs from the 1930s to 50s on Dame Nellie Melba’s grand piano – an incredibly rare treat for theatre lovers.
Alternatively, step outside and explore a range of local cafes, restaurants and bars, all just a short walk from the historic Lydiard St theatre – the perfect opportunity to experience Ballarat's culinary scene and recharge between shows.
