The Ballarat New Cemetery like all cemeteries provides a wonderful insight into the culture and history of its communities. The Ballarat Cemetery has many sections. Some established on religious beliefs, others such as the Chinese section are based on culture. During the Tour, the Chinese beliefs that inform their burial practices are discussed and compared with European rituals. Consideration is also given to the contrasting graves. The walk to and through the Cemetery looks at the Moon Gate and the garden beyond. The information on the Chinese footstones, the burning tower and altar illustrate further details of Chinese burial practices.

The tour encompasses some hilly and uneven terrain and is not accessible for mobility walkers or prams. Guests should wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather.

Please be respectful of the cemetery space when undertaking the tour.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
