Why are you here? It's the question three Ballarat based artists are asking the wider community in response to the theme of connection and belonging. What holds people here in Ballarat? What connects them to and within the community? Artists Robyn Barnett, Sylvia Aguirre and Diana Paez are creating a large-scale installation weaving together your responses though film, sound, photography and textiles. Community participation is at the heart of the work.

The final installation will be exhibited at the Unicorn Collection, 131 Sturt Street, Ballarat Central during Ballarat Craft and Design Week. You are invited to get involved. Take part in a community workshop, or simply drop in a piece of your work at one of several collection points and then share in the experience of the exhibition.

The Unicorn Collection is a gallery project showcasing a curated collection of artworks produced in regional Victoria. Hosting a range of experiences, pop-ups and retail opportunities, the Unicorn Collection is a place which truly belongs to creative people from the regions.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
