Lantern Vaults invites you beneath the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute for a rare, immersive journey through its hidden underground spaces.

Step below street level and move through a sequence of vaulted rooms shaped by light, projection and sound. Guided by shifting illumination, animated imagery and voice, each space reveals a new layer of story. Narrated through the perspective of 12 year old Florence Batten, daughter of the Institute's Secretary in the early 1870s, the work draws you into a world of the lives unfolding beneath the surface of a growing city.

Original artworks by Amanda Western bring Ballarat's goldrush era into motion, unfolding through lantern sculpture and voiced narrative. Light shifts. Shadows gather. The past draws closer. Spaces rarely open to the public become the stage for this intimate, atmospheric experience.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
