Bring new life to your jumpers, cardigans, beanies, scarves, socks and other knitwear in this exclusive Rare Trades Centre experience with Modern Mending author Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald.

Erin will teach you multiple ways to revive your winter woollies: darning holes and reinforcing threadbare areas, fixing ladders (aka dropped stitches), smoothing out snags, and de-fuzzing your favourite cosy pieces. You'll also learn laundry, storage and moth-prevention tips.

You will be working with contrasting yard colours in this session for easier learning, but the techniques can be applied to invisible mending later on.

Bring your own socks for mending practice, and any knitwear requiring a bit of love. Items with minimal damage can be repaired on the day, students can practise and prepare to work on big jobs after the session.

Students will each receive a copy of Modern Mending the book, a knitted practice swatch and essential mending supplies; additional mending supplies will be available for purchase on the day (bring your own mending pile for colour matching).

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
