Visit the Observatory this January with the astronomy lover in your life. Bookings are essential.

Evening sessions give you a wonderful insight into the observatory and astronomy in Ballarat with a guided tour of the historic site, astronomy chats with a local astronomer and night sky viewing with your eyes and a telescope. If the sky is cloudly night sky viewing will be replaced by a virtual night sky tour. Alternatively a raincheck can be be arranged.

AstroKids! is the place to be for kids who love space and their families. See what the planet looks like from space, learn why earth is so special and how looking at Earth from space is making the way for some pretty cool science. Participants will listen to an astronomer, explore a historic observatory and try some space related activities. AstroKids! Let's Talk Seasons is aimed at families with children 5 to 10 years old.

You can also book in for a 30 minute guided tour of the Ballarat Observatory from the newest items and telescopes to historic telescopes over 100 years old, and view the beautiful led light windows. Bring your walking shoes.

View the Sun safely with a local astronomer using the Solar Projection method at the Ballarat Observatory and learn more about our closest star.

Please check the website to book your desired activity.

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.

©️ 2026 Visit Ballarat. This initiative is funded by the City of Ballarat and Tourism Midwest Victoria.
