Enjoy a slice of Ballarat this August with the return of Ballarat’s Best Pie competition.
Take your pick from more than 35 savoury and sweet pies at some of the city’s top cafes, restaurants and bakeries.
On the menu at Beechworth Bakery Ballarat is the gold digger pie.
Think slow-cooked local lamb braised in rich red wine with rosemary and sweet carrots, and encased in golden, flaky pastry.
"This is our hearty tribute to the hardworking prospectors of Ballarat’s gold rush era," chefs Nick Harris and Peter Fartuszynski said.
"It's a brilliantly unexpected twist on the original digger’s diet of mutton and damper.
"This pie is everything the early miners dreamed of but never had time to cook. Rich, rustic, and striking gold with every bite."
