Ballarat Symphony Orchestra's Sunday afternoon live concert promises to be an unforgettable experience for all, especially for the young, and the young at heart.
Don't be late, because in an action-packed seventy minutes, you'll first experience the awe-inspiring grandeur of Strauss' music from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Then you'll be rocketed by Holst through The Planets - from Mars to Jupiter - and then back to Earth, where Dukas' hapless Sorcerer's Apprentice wreaks havoc with out-of-control broomsticks and buckets.
Calmer moments will break the journey. Pause in a Renaissance court to be enchanted by Ancient Airs and Dances for Lute, beautiful 15th century tunes transcribed for string orchestra in 1931 by Respighi and performed by the strings of the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra.
Then together you'll delight in the freshness of the early Morning on a mountain in Greig's Norway, before descending into that scary Hall of the Mountain King. Your musical journey will end in Kiev (Kyiv) where, with the Russian composer Mussorgsky, you will gaze in awe at architect Viktor Hartmann's drawing depicting his 1869 design for that city's magnificent Great Gate.
The Ballarat Symphony Orchestra will be conducted on these Journeys through Space and Time by Andrew Leach. The orchestral leader is violinist Sarah Nieuwkerk.
