Jay Rankine's artwork — Growth — reflects his experience of living in Ballarat and witnessing the city change and grow over the past 16 years.

"My wife and I moved from Melbourne to Ballarat 16 years ago when our son was just six months old. I still remember sitting together on the grass at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, filling out rental applications while admiring the surroundings," Jay said. "Since then, we’ve visited the gardens regularly, whether to pick up a few things at the Ballarat Farmers Market or to meet family during the Ballarat Begonia Festival, enjoy the activities and watch the parade."

"This artwork reflects on my experience of living in Ballarat and witnessing the city change and grow over the past 16 years. Inspired by the forms and shapes found in the plants and natural environment of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, the design brings together organic elements to create a contemporary interpretation of Ballarat’s growth and historical character."

Acknowledgement of Country

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities. These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years. As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
