Embark on a whimsical journey in the Ballarat with the Slow Travel Self-Guided Tour. Explore laneways, soak up the stunning historic town centre and discover hidden stories, local hidden gems, antique shops and artist studios.

It’s recommended to do this self-guided tour between Wednesday-Saturday between 10:30am-4:00pm for the most optimal experience.

The inspiring journey includes: quirky cafes/shops, intriguing lanes, history tales, art studios/galleries.

GPS directions via Google Map links. Pick up exclusive hand drawn map and The Lydiard General or the Known World Bookshop. Discounts at some shops included.

Days of operation:

  • The self-guided tour runs Wednesdays-Saturday, starting at 10:30am to finish by 4:00pm. If you’d like to visit a particular spot, please check the guidebook for their particular opening times. Purchase your guidebook beforehand so you can plan out your route.

Tour highlights:

  • The Lydiard General: A Ballarat gem, the Lydiard General serves among the best coffee, cake and toasties in town.
  • Ballarat Art Gallery: The oldest regional art gallery in Australia, this art gallery has stunning historical artwork that are a must see. Included near the end of the tour.
  • The Ballaarat Mechanics Institute: This historic library has an amazing collection of books - almost all of which you can peruse and read in their old library room.
  • Main Road historical shops and antiques: A delightful collection of local shops in the historic Main Road precinct.
