Demanding Proof is an exhibition by Colin Clark.
Colin Clark is a Central Victoria-based printmaker who likes things well made but slightly imperfect, and able to explain themselves. Working primarily in relief printing, his practice is characterised by a sense of humour, sometimes quirky, sometimes dark across a range of themes and ideas. Relief printing has a habit of keeping artists honest. Cuts can't be undone, and every pull of the press records exactly what happened, whether it was planned that way or not. Colin enjoys this lack of safety net, allowing marks, textures and tonal shifts to stay visible rather than tidying them away.
Recent pieces draw on old black-and-white newspaper half-tone dot images, re-imagined famous artworks and book covers in the style of Soviet-era propaganda posters and dogs living up to their names. Humour and wordplay appear often, sometimes quietly, sometimes less so, but always alongside a strong interest in structure and clarity.
Demanding Proof reflects Colin's belief that images should stand up to a closer look. Each work shows not just what it is, but how it came to be, evidence of pressure and process but embodying the pure joy of creating art.
