A Lindsay Menagerie

Animals loomed large in the works of the famous Lindsay family of artists, Percy, Lionel, Norman, Ruby and Daryl Lindsay. As children growing up in Creswick near Ballarat, the Lindsays were fascinated by a collection of birds including parrots, macaws and peacocks kept by a neighbour and later, throughout their careers, each included birds and animals in their prints, drawings and paintings.

For Percy and Daryl Lindsay, animals were part of the landscape, on farms or the racetrack. For Ruby and Norman Lindsay, animals allowed their imaginations to soar and included them in fantastical scenes and fairy tales. Lionel Lindsay’s sketches and woodcuts reveal a meticulous study of birds, cats and other animals.

This exhibition is presented alongside the Gallery’s recreation of the sitting room of the family home in Creswick, where members of the family would spend their evenings sketching, storytelling and playing music on the family piano.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
