The Ballarat International Foto Biennale have announced Swedish artist Annika Nordenskiöld as the winner of its inaugural Prompted Peculiar – International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Prize.

Annika Nordenskiöld was selected for her work Twin Sisters in Love, with the judges describing how the artist most convincingly managed to create an image that looks real and at the same time plays with our idea of reality.

The first-time event received over 100 submissions from around the world including work from artists in Sweden, Czechia, Israel, Germany and across Australia.

Almost 1000 votes were cast in the People’s Choice Prize, with Victorian artist Hanna Silver receiving the highest amount for her work Robot Intermarriage, Melbourne 1895, 2023.

As new technology impacts visual culture, Prompted Peculiar is an invitation to debate where this new art of ‘promptography’ belongs.

The term ‘promptography’ was coined when photographer Boris Eldagsen turned down first prize in the creative open category of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards, because his image ‘The Electrician’ was generated by AI, and in his words, was ‘not photography’.

The jury shortlist exhibition of 20 works submitted for the Prompted Peculiar – AI Prize is currently on display as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. Catch the exhibition at the BAad Gallery & Events space (737 Sturt Street, Ballarat) until 22 October.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
