Sports & Activities
Ballarat has some of the best sporting facilities in Australia and often plays host to national sporting events from cycling, basketball and cricket to polocrosse, royal tennis and badminton.
Ballarat is home to Olympic representatives in swimming, shooting, rowing, badminton, boxing, track, basketball, equestrian, weight-lifting and canoeing. It was also the venue for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic rowing and canoeing events that were held on Lake Wendouree.
Whatever your area of interest, we are sure to have a club or venue representing your sport. If you prefer to be a spectator rather than a participator, that's fine, too, as most venues have great spectator facilities.
Ballarat’s sporting pedigree is well established. The city is home to Olympic representatives in many sports and was the venue for the 1956 Olympic rowing and canoeing competitions. Facilities here are world-class with international cricket matches at the historic Eastern Oval, AFL football at the Northern Oval and a selection of exciting meetings at the Ballarat Turf Club. If you’d like to cast a line or two, some of the state’s best fishing can be experienced in freshwater lakes and reservoirs near the city.
