Montages: The Full Cut 1999–2015 brings together for the first time the full suite of eight montage films by artist Tracey Moffatt and her long-time collaborator Gary Hillberg. It spans 16 years of Moffatt and Hillberg’s collaborative practice and includes their most recent work, The Art 2015.
The exhibition is an ode to cinema and to the cinematic form, offering unprecedented insight into the stereotypes that populate our collective cultural imagination. In this suite of montages, Moffatt and Hillberg have spliced together thousands of clips from iconic Hollywood films, telemovies and arthouse cinema to create new narratives which tap into the humour and pathos of universally shared subjects like art, revolution, love and destruction.
Tracey Moffatt is regarded internationally as one of Australia’s most important artists. Throughout her career, Moffatt has used a combination of film, video and photography to dismantle conventions of storytelling, usually in a vividly Australian context. In 2017, she represented Australia at the Venice Biennale. Gary Hillberg has worked as an experimental filmmaker and music video producer since the late 1980s.
The exhibition is curated and developed by Artspace Sydney and touring nationally in partnership with Museums and Galleries of NSW.
