On Monday 23 September, Ballarat Base Hospital will be transformed into an interactive hospital for teddies and toys. Kids can learn how to bandage teddy up, give teddy an x-ray, dress up as a surgeon, check teddy’s eyes and teeth, give teddy a vaccination and attend the teddy physio and dietitian.
The event is being run by volunteer medical, nursing and allied health students from more than five universities in Ballarat. Gold coin donations will be collected to go towards the Children’s Ward at Ballarat Base Hospital.
The event aims to familiarise children with medical staff, equipment and terminology in a non-threatening and fun environment, so they are less scared should they have to attend the hospital for themselves, a friend or a relative. Additionally, the mock-consultation interactions allow promotion of healthy lifestyle choices such as good nutrition, regular exercise and sleep habits, with the hope of encouraging healthy behaviours in the community.
