The wintry weather shouldn’t deter you from walking along Ballarat’s glistening streetscapes to explore the city’s food and wine offerings this season, especially when there’s a cosy fireplace awaiting your arrival.

Here are some of the restaurants and bars in Ballarat where you can find yourself a warming fireplace as you while the evening away, red wine in hand.

Mitchell Harris Wines

By far a local favourite, this space not only serves up some award-winning vino from the Pyrenees wine region, but has an impressive dining menu to boot. Combine this with its contemporary and cosy interior and you have yourself the perfect winter hideaway.

Golden City Hotel

Great for families and couples alike, the Golden City Hotel is a tried and tested restaurant with a menu of classic dishes for all tastes. With plenty of space and meals for anytime of the day, this is a safe winter bet!

Billy’s Bistro and Bar

Located opposite Sovereign Hill, this is a great place to settle in after your magical Winter Wonderlights experience. Serving up Mediterranean inspired eats by the warming fire, Billy’s is a sure place to beat the winter blues.

The Hydrant Food Hall

Breakfast, brunch or coffee, The Hydrant has its very own wood heater to provide extra warmth and comfort during your equally warming feed. Seven Seeds by the fire? Can’t ask for more, really.

The Munster Arms

Located in Ballarat’s historic Bakery Hill, this family-owned and beautifully-renovated pub has a fireplace in its front bar, giving patrons the chance to sip the region’s top drops and craft brews as they warm up by the fire and watch the game.

Craig’s Royal Hotel

As you enter the majestic space that is Craig’s Royal Hotel, you’ll be welcomed by the warmth of the historic fireplace and the beauty that abounds. Settle in for a fine dining meal at The Gallery, enjoy coffee and cake at the Cafe & Larder, or indulge in some beer, wine and spirits at Craig’s Wine Bar.

City Oval Hotel

Positioned perfectly in between Ballarat’s main thoroughfare and the iconic Lake Wendouree, the City Oval Hotel has been lovingly renovated complete with warming fires, a relaxed atmoshpere, and a modern pub menu boasting beers, ales and wines from around the world.

The Forge

One of Ballarat’s most popular restaurants, The Forge serves up some of the best woodfired pizzas you’ll ever come across, topped with fine regional charcuterie, cheese and produce that is typical of Ballarat and surrounds. If that’s not enough to warm you right up, then the fireplace sure-as-hell will.

The Pancake Kitchen

Short stacks, soups, kids meals, coffee, crepes and all the maple syrup and ice-cream in the world – the Pancake Kitchen is one of those family-favourites serving up much more than just pancakes. And with a roaring fireplace, this place is a ripper of a winter-warmer.

Hop Temple

Warming beer, wine, ales, brew food and a fireplace, combined with the Christmas in July celebrations every Wednesday, a magical umbrella-clad laneway, and festive tunes. Hop is the kind of place you imagine settling into at wintertime.

The George Hotel

This Ballarat locale is not only laden with history, but it serves up a mean woodfired pizza. Snuggle up next to the gas log fire in The Heritage Bar and Restaurant, rug up and dine in winter’s afterglow in The Lane, or sip on the top drops at the Cider Bar while enjoying some live music.

The Lost Ones Basement Bar

Indulge in a cheese platter, a mocktail, some gin and whiskey, or all of the above, as you while the evening away listening to some sweet live music or playing a game of Cards Against Humanity with your mates. The Lost Ones even do dinner bookings on certain days, so you can warm up both inside and out.

The Mallow

Enjoy a hearty pub meal with a contemporary twist as you indulge in some warming local craft beers on-tap. The Mallow is one of Ballarat’s most-loved watering holes, and a sure winter warmer!
