Family Weekend

Have toddler, will travel. Yes, I know what you’re thinking — in your dreams. But you can have an active little one, yet still enjoy a weekend away, and that’s just what we did in Ballarat.

First up, was the Ballarat Wildlife Park. We absolutely loved getting up close to all the animals and Poppy fed the kangaroos. The tour was an easy pace even for tiny feet. Already our weekend was off to a great start.

It’s rare for us to be able to sit down and enjoy a meal out with a toddler but Carboni’s made us feel so welcome and they even had toys for Poppy. We experienced this genuine hospitality everywhere we ate in Ballarat. And the food was amazing.

After lunch we checked into Quest. As you can see in the photo Poppy felt at home straight away. We all did. And having an apartment with its own lounge and kitchen just made it so much easier.

The playground at Lake Wendouree, what an imaginative space. While Poppy had fun exploring, older

kids could act out all kinds of adventures. Being next to the lake, it really is a magical setting.

Dinner was at the Forge Pizzeria. Another fantastic restaurant. The food, the vibe and super family- friendly. It was the perfect way to finish an already happy day.

We could have had breakfast at the apartment, even a cooked one at that. For a family on a budget that would make sense. But when there are so many cool cafes offering local produce, like the Hydrant Food Hall, well you know where we were Sunday morning.

Sovereign Hill was, of course, a highlight. My husband and I were sharing memories of coming here when we were kids. So, it was extra special to relive the experience with our little one and, in the months and years ahead, no doubt we will be returning time and again.

We couldn’t leave Ballarat without having something else to eat, this time at Yellow Espresso. Everywhere we’ve eaten the food has been delicious and Poppy was enjoying it all. That’s what we have noticed everywhere we went. Ballarat didn’t just accommodate Poppy but welcomed her with open arms. No surprise then that we will come back to Ballarat and hopefully very soon.
