Excitement builds for Ballarat's Super Rugby double header

History will be made this weekend when Super Rugby comes to Ballarat for the very first time.

Victoria’s own Melbourne Rebels will host a huge double header at Mars Stadium this Saturday 22 February.

In Super Rugby’s first ever regional game, the Melbourne Rebels W take on the Brumbies at 12.15pm, followed by the men’s team at 2.45 pm against South Africa's Sharks.

It promises to be an emotional day for the Rebels, with the club's identity – including the name, logo and creed – inspired by the 1854 battle at Ballarat's Eureka Stockade.

The women’s side will look to capture their first victory of 2020, led by superstar co-captain Mel Kawa, who plays with a dash of speed and finesse which is set to thrill the Ballarat crowd.

Meanwhile, the Rebels (1-2) will be searching for back-to-back wins following last Friday’s gutsy performance against the NSW Waratahs in the wet.

Facing the Sharks (2-1), the clash promises to be a high-octane scoring affair with both sides combining for over 160 points just three rounds into the season.

The Sharks are led by Aphelele Fassi, who’s had a sensational start to the 2020 season, leading the league in metres carried and defenders beaten.

Melbourne will be headlined by Wallabies team members Isi Naisarani and Dane Haylett Petty, who have set the Super Rugby world alight, leading the entire competition for carries at number one and two respectively.

And for all the try-lovers out there, get excited because the Rebels carry one of the best in Andrew Kellaway.

Using his razor-sharp kicking skills and blistering leg speed, Kellaway has thrilled the rugby public on three occasions already this season.

The leagues’ second highest try scorer will need to have another big game for the Rebels to overcome a dangerous South African side, seeking redemption following last week's 38-22 loss to the New Zealand Hurricanes.

Super Rugby is rugby union's best league in the world and Saturday will showcase some of the competition's biggest and brightest stars on the hallowed turf at Mars Stadium.

Tickets available via Ticketek.
