Get a glimpse behind the scenes of Sovereign Hill’s costume department as part of the 2019 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.
On Monday, March 4, at 5.30pm, fashion enthusiasts have the chance to join Sovereign Hill’s costume manager Erin Santamaria and her team for an exclusive insight into the department, which creates historically-accurate costumes for over 380 museum staff and 250 volunteers.
“Costume is one of the most recognisable aspects of Sovereign Hill’s interpretation of life on the Victorian goldfields and is a powerful tool in communicating how fashion, morality, etiquette and social structures have changed over time, ” Erin said.
“This one-off event provides an opportunity to learn not only about Victorian fashion but the business model that sits behind this iconic aspect of the Sovereign Hill experience.”
The purpose and role of costume at Sovereign Hill is to support the museum’s historical narrative by creating authentic characters who bring history to life. It’s also an essential component to effective storytelling and, for visitors, provides the feeling of being immersed in their 1850s experience.
As well as champagne and hors d’oeuvres, attendees will be able to see some of the costumes up close and gain an exclusive insight into how the costume department operates.
