Ballarat has been crowned the 2021 Victorian Top Tourism Town.

A VTIC initiative, the inaugural awards recognise towns that deliver amazing visitor experiences and are committed to growing visitation to their destination.

Ballarat won the title ahead of Bendigo, Dromana, Frankston, Lakes Entrance and Swan Hill in a public vote.

Port Fairy was awarded the 2021 Victorian Top Small Tourism Town.

More than 23,000 votes were recorded across both categories.

“Tourism has been heavily affected by the pandemic but we know Ballarat is held in the highest possible regard, not only from the tourism professionals that judged this award but by the community here in Ballarat and visitors who have rated their experience in the highest possible way,” City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said.

“We thank our biggest contributors, the businesses and operators who contribute to making Ballarat Victoria’s top tourism town. We also thank VTIC for making this award possible.”

The awards were announced at a gala ceremony at the Bendigo Art Gallery on 14 July.

Ballarat will now compete for the title of Australia’s Top Tourism Town, with the winner announced at Parliament House in Canberra on 2 September.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
