Ballarat to host Super Rugby match in 2020

Ballarat will become the first regional Australian town to host a Super Rugby match for premiership points in February 2020.

The Melbourne Rebels will take on the Durban Sharks at Ballarat's Mars Stadium on Saturday 22 February at 2.45pm.

It will mark the third time the Rebels have played in Ballarat, following a Super Rugby trial against the Reds and an NRC match against Queensland Country in 2019.

On hand to announce the historic occasion in Ballarat on 19 December was Melbourne Rebels GM of Rugby & Pathways Nick Ryan, Rebels squad member Semisi Tupou and City of Ballarat Councillor Des Hudson.

"It’s a really exciting initiative for the club," Mr Ryan told rugby.com.au

"It’s the first time in 10 years we have taken a game away from AAMI Park and we have chosen Ballarat to do that."

"The welcome we have had from Ballarat, the city and the club and the local schools has been really fantastic for us."
