Ballarat is now home of the world’s top gluten-free beer after also claiming the title of Australia’s best beer earlier this year.

Ballarat brewer O’Brien Beer snapped up the accolade of World’s Best Specialty Gluten-Free Beer for its Belgian Ale at the 2021 World Beer Awards.

Announced earlier this month, the global awards celebrate the very best internationally-recognised beers.

O’Brien Beer describes its award-winning Belgian Ale as a “slightly sweet and warming ale” featuring “subtle spice, earth and fruit character with a dry finish.”

Belgian candi sugar is added to the brew’s sorghum and millet malts.

In May this year, Ballarat’s Dollar Bill Brewing won Champion Australian Beer and Best Fruit Beer at the 2021 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) for its Gold Tooth 2021 brew.

O’Brien Beer won six gold medals at the AIBA (including one for its Belgian Ale), along with two silver medals and five bronze.

Father-of-two John O’Brien founded the business 20 years ago after he was diagnosed with coeliac disease and told by his doctor he could no longer drink beer.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
