Sovereign Hill

History is brought to life at Australia’s largest outdoor museum, Sovereign Hill

Go back in time to Ballarat’s 1850s gold rush days, when thousands of international adventurers converged on the goldfields in search of fortune.

Witness a $160,000 gold pour, venture underground on a guided gold mine tour, watch steam-driven machinery in action, and chat with wheelwrights, candlemakers and confectioners as they ply their trades.

Bradshaw Street, Ballarat VIC 3350

'After the Gold Rush' at the Art Gallery of Ballarat

As the weather heats up outside, make your way inside to the air-conditioned comfort of the historic Art Gallery of Ballarat.

One of the gallery’s newest exhibitions, After the Gold Rush (9 November-9 February), combines bold paintings and bright sculptures by Melbourne artist Troy Emery with works from the gallery collection.

40 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat VIC 3350

Eureka Centre

Continue your journey of discovery with an afternoon at the Eureka Centre, which is located at the site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade rebellion.

The centre explores the cultural impact of the gold rush and tells the stories of the men and women who risked their lives in the fight for miners’ rights. It is also home to one of Australia’s most iconic cultural artefacts, the Eureka Flag.

102 Stawell Street South, Eureka VIC 3350

Picnic at the Eureka Stockade Gardens or Lake Wendouree

Surrounding the Eureka Centre is the Eureka Stockade Gardens – the perfect spot for a relaxing picnic while the kids enjoy the stockade-themed playground.

Alternatively, head to Lake Wendouree where you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to self-catered dining locations, from the beautiful Ballarat Botanical Gardens to the Lake Wendouree Adventure Playground.

121 Stawell Street South
