Ballarat: The home of Doctor Blake

When conversations for a murder mystery set in Ballarat commenced in 2009, Visit Ballarat knew it would be a huge coup for the city. But the success of The Dr Blake Mysteries has had a much larger and positive impact than ever anticipated.

Dubbed as the number one Australian drama, the television series tells the story of Doctor Lucien Blake who returns home to Ballarat in the late 1950s to run his deceased father’s medical practice. In doing so, he also takes on the role of police surgeon – a job that sees him solving some of Ballarat’s most cryptic and horrifying murders.

Starring Craig McLachlan, Nadine Garner and John Wood as well as many other notable Australian actors, The Doctor Blake Mysteries attracts an average of 1.5 million viewers every week while on air, and is the first ABC-commissioned drama to screen on BBC1.

With four seasons aired so far, the series has also gained widespread recognition in Canada and the United States.

Filmed on-location in Ballarat, Doctor Blake showcases our iconic landmarks including the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the Mechanics Institute, the Ballarat Fire Station, the Old Colonists Club, as well as some of our most iconic streetscapes including Lydiard Street and Sturt Street.
