For a little town, Buninyong (15 minutes from Ballarat), has a lot going for it – a film festival, marmalade fair, Botanical Gardens, a vibrant winemaking scene and annual Good Life Festival for a start. It was settled before Ballarat and the main street has some great examples of goldfields architecture, including the Town Hall, the Old Library and Mechanics’ Institute, and the Police Court House – all beautifully restored. As well as checking those out, pop into one of the local cafes or restaurants, or you may even pick up the odd bit of vintage, too, while you’re about it.

Overlooking the town is Mount Buninyong – it’s part of the route of the annual road cycling championships, but at all times of the year is terrific for bushwalkers, hikers or cyclists.
