Warm up with delicious food next to a cosy fireplace

Visit Ballarat

After a wintry day exploring Ballarat, warm up with delicious food and drink next to a crackling fireplace. Here are some of our favourite restaurants and bars with fireplaces.

Mitchell Harris
By far a local favourite, this space not only serves up some award-winning vino from the Pyrenees wine region but has an impressive dining menu to boot. Combine this with its contemporary and cosy interior and you have yourself the perfect winter hideaway.

City Oval Hotel
This historic hotel offers a warm relaxed atmosphere with modern pub dining and a wide range of beers, ales, and wines. Positioned just a stone’s throw from Lake Wendouree this is the perfect spot to warm up after a brisk walk around the lake.

Michael Unwin Wines
Just out of town, take in the aroma of maturing wines at the cellar door of Michael Unwin Wines. Warm up by the fire as you sip on a glass of red and grab a few extra bottles of their single vineyard One Goat, Umbrella Man and Tattooed Lady varieties to take home.

Azurri at the Mercure
Formerly Billy’s Bistro, Azurri has reopened with a fresh new look. Located across from Sovereign Hill, enjoy the same Mediterranean inspired menu and friendly service and beat the winter blues in style at Azurri.

Carboni’s Italian Kitchen
Warm up with a crackling fire and authentic Italian food at Carboni’s Italian Kitchen. From the smoky smell of woodfired pizza to silky smooth pasta and bubbly prosecco, a visit here is sure to delight the senses.

The Hydrant
Breakfast, brunch or coffee, The Hydrant has its very own wood heater to provide extra warmth and comfort during your equally warming feed. Seven Seeds by the fire? Can’t ask for more, really. Keep an eye on their Facebook page to hear about their re-opening and new menu items.

The Mallow
Enjoy a hearty pub meal with a contemporary twist as you indulge in some warming local craft beers on-tap. The Mallow is one of Ballarat’s most-loved watering holes, and a sure winter warmer!

Hop Temple
Warming beer, wine, ales, brew food and a fireplace, combined with the Christmas in July celebrations every Wednesday, a magical umbrella-clad laneway, and festive tunes. Hop is the kind of place you imagine settling into at wintertime.

Craig’s Royal Hotel
As you enter the majestic space that is Craig’s Royal Hotel, you’ll be welcomed by the warmth of the historic fireplace and the beauty that abounds. Settle in for a fine dining meal at The Gallery, enjoy coffee and cake at the Cafe & Larder, or indulge in some beer, wine and spirits at Craig’s Wine Bar.

The Pancake Kitchen
Short stacks, soups, kids’ meals, coffee, crepes and all the maple syrup and ice-cream in the world – the Pancake Kitchen is one of those family-favourites serving up much more than just pancakes. And with a roaring fireplace, this place is a ripper of a winter warmer.

RJM’s Wine Bar
There’s nothing like indulging on a local cheese platter or ploughman’s board to share with a wine in hand. One thing that always makes this experience better is an open fireplace to warm up by, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at this relaxing Mair Street wine bar.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
